Procurement of goods and services in the right quantity, of the right quality, at the right time, at the right price and from the right source is a very important function for any Central or State Government agency. A transparent, efficient and accountable public procurement system is also required to create a conducive environment for the domestic industry and entrepreneurs to do business with the Government.
By setting up Government eMarketplace (GeM), the Government has ushered in huge structural changes in the entire public procurement machinery. GeM is a state-of-the-art public procurement platform that has used technology to remove entry barriers for bonafide sellers and has created a vibrant e-marketplace with a wide range of goods and services.
Government eMarketplace (GeM) is an end-to-end procurement system developed for the purchase of goods and services of common use by government buyers. As per Rule 149 of the GFR-2017, procurement of Goods and Services by Ministries/ Departments of Central Government has been made mandatory for Goods or Services available on GeM.
Presently, more than 200000 products in about 150 categories and hiring of transport service are available on GeM portal. Around 14000 buyers along with around 36000 sellers are already been the associate/registered with GeM.
